The garden’s collection includes more than 120 species and varieties of rhododendrons, as well as countless hybrids, many of which date back to the time when Professor Rihards Kondratovičs began his breeding work here. Some rhododendrons bloom early in spring, but the majority flower from late May to early June.

Most rhododendron species are found in East and Southeast Asia, as well as in North America and Europe. They typically grow in mountainous areas or near bodies of water.

Currently, several species are in bloom, including the yellow rhododendron, Smirnov’s rhododendron, Makino rhododendron, and the rosy rhododendron. The marsh Labrador tea (Rhododendron tomentosum), also known in Latvia as the tube-leaved rhododendron, is also flowering – it is the only rhododendron species growing wild in Latvia. Other species are set to bloom slightly later, so the blooming season will continue gradually.

Among the deciduous rhododendron varieties currently in bloom are ‘Teika’, ‘Mazais jefiņš’, ‘Austra’, and ‘Rubīns’. From the evergreen varieties, visitors can see the Yakushima rhododendron ‘Kiochiro Wada’, as well as the cultivars ‘Spīgana’ and ‘Ingrīda’.

The duration of the rhododendron blooming period depends on the weather – warm and sunny conditions lead to more intense flowering, while cool and rainy weather can prolong the bloom. Each visit may offer a slightly different rhododendron experience – with new colors, species, and varieties reaching their peak at different times.

The rhododendron blooming season is short but remarkably vibrant – we invite you to take this opportunity to visit the garden and enjoy the rich diversity of rhododendron in person.

The Botanical Garden is open daily from 10:00 to 20:00.
