From June 10 to 12, the fifth meeting of the LIFE PeatCarbon project management team and working group took place in Helsinki, at the Finnish Meteorological Institute, with project partners participating in person and remotely from Latvia, Finland, Germany and Denmark. Latvia was represented by the LIFE PeatCarbon project members of the University of Latvia (UL).

On the first day of the meeting, the main topics discussed were project sustainability, communication strategies, and the applicability of carbon credits in peatland restoration. There was also a public activity – the opening of the international photo exhibition “Peatlands and Climate. Restoration stories”.

On the second day of the meeting, participants focused on ecosystem service assessment, greenhouse gas (GHG) emission monitoring and modelling, as well as the use of GEST (Geospatial Emission Sampling Technique) type classification in emission calculations in Latvia and Finland.

On the third day of the meeting, participants went on a field trip to southwestern Finland to get acquainted in person with some of the deepest and oldest peat soils in the region. The purpose of the visit was to explore different types of peatland areas – both untouched and restored – and to analyse their role in GHG emission processes.

The meeting in Helsinki marked significant progress in the implementation of the LIFE PeatCarbon project – from emission reduction modelling and risk assessment to active public engagement and scientific communication. Partner discussions demonstrated that the key to the project’s success lies in interdisciplinary cooperation, scientific precision, and a transparent methodological approach.
