There is hardly anything more beautiful than the moment when, within the city walls, the first giant blossom cups open in the oasis of the University of Latvia Botanical Garden.

At present, the Loebner magnolia (Magnolia × loebneri) is approaching full bloom. Buds are also gradually opening on the willow-leaf magnolia (M. salicifolia), star magnolia (M. stellata), northern Kobus magnolia (M. kobus var. borealis), and Kobus magnolia (M. kobus). This is a truly special time: magnolias bloom before their leaves emerge, and the large white flowers on bare branches create a genuinely majestic sight.

Some of the trees in the collection are impressive in size and at least 50 years old. Although magnolias originate from warmer regions of North America and Asia, the Garden’s collection features carefully selected species and cultivars that are exceptionally well suited to Latvia’s climate and reward us each spring with abundant flowering.

Bring your coffee, your camera, and someone who could use a little floral strength.
