Late summer is the season when Dahlias start to bloom in a vast range of colors and forms!

Development of the Dahlia Garden in the Botanical Garden of the University of Latvia was dated already in pre-war years. From 1947 to 1963 dahlia collection was maintained by horticulturist Ernests Palcers. Later the curator of the collection was breeder Kārlis Ruks who selected more than 100 new varieties. For the present there are around 260 varieties in the Botanical Garden, and they represent all of 14 different dahlia flower types - single flowered, anemone flowered, collerette, waterlily, decorative, ball, pompon, cactus, semi-cactus, miscellaneous, fimbriated, star, double orchid, and paeony flowered dahlias.
